Each person’s faith journey is unique, yet there is a commonality in our Christian experience. We all begin our walk with Christ when we perceive God’s love for us in an intimate relationship through Jesus Christ. Along the way our faith grows stronger as we learn to believe, as we struggle to live out our faith, and as we experience the joy of serving God and the Body of Christ as faithful members of God’s family. Yes, we will have pain and hardship in life; we will doubt God at times, or feel angry when we see suffering. During difficult seasons, our faith may endure merely out of a determination to take God’s Word at face value, holding God to the promises in the Bible. Through such experiences, our faith enters into new seasons of discovery and praise as we focus on God rather than ourselves.

Just as we have seasons in our physical lives, as Christians we also have seasons in our spiritual lives. The Christian life is not a linear experience with a predetermined pattern leading to spiritual maturity. Rather, our Christian experience is punctuated with diverse seasons of faith. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippian Christians a confident word of encouragement. He told them they were not being tossed around randomly but that Jesus Christ was with them in every season of life, leading them on a path of spiritual growth. He said, “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6 NRSV)
